Techniques have proven effective in reducing the risk of explosions and fires, and often in subtle ways to save lives. The first technique to be described is "separation". Dividing a building into fire-resistant compartments or cells with fire-resistant materials can prevent the spread of fire and smoke within the building, as well as the passage of clouds of vapor or dust. 

Fire compartment walls, floors and doors should normally provide 60 minutes of fire resistance, but this may vary depending on the level of risk within the compartment. The walls, floors, and doors separating such compartments usually have to last 30 minutes.
